There were five things which caught my eye as I strolled towards the rocky Sea Point bluff one brilliant morning, prompting me to hastily return to my hotel and collect my Nikon.

First and foremost, it was the intensity of light. Almost nuclear in its brilliance. The turquoise Atlantic waters of Cape Town are like no other — jewel-like in their propensity to glitter and shine. Then there was the geomorphology of the space, the bathers and their place within the seascape, and finally, the gulls, arriving in droves to settle briefly upon the dark conglomerate rock before something or someone would cause them to lift off and pirouette away into an azure sky.

When seeing life arranged like this against such dazzling natural theatre, I knew I needed more than an iPhone to do justice to the scene and its detailed tapestry of light, texture, movement, and place.

The Rock Group, together with its companion piece The Gulls, could perhaps be construed as a diptych on the choreography of life, landscape, and light along the Seapoint coastline.
